Writing Tips:
As a community-based platform, Beirut Today accepts all sorts of writing. If you’re confident with what you’ve written, submit it the way it is. We believe that the best writing comes when you’re given the space to experiment.
Otherwise, these guidelines may be of some help:
- Suggested word count: 400 to 1,000 words. But, we’re flexible.
- No discrimination: To keep our platform a safe space for all, all discriminative content will be rejected. That includes discrimination based on gender, sex, sexuality, race, nationality religion, and more.
- Be concise: Your piece should be written concisely. Keep your sentences short and to the point. Bear in mind that you’re writing for an audience. As such, your piece should be written in a way that makes it easy for ideas to resonate with readers. If you are writing about a particularly complex topic, breakdown the ideas to a more digestible format using different sections.
- Make your piece as accessible as possible. You should write informally but in an informative tone. If you include acronyms make sure to insert what they stand for. Kindly do not use long, complex unnecessary words that can be replaced by easier ones.
- If you include a statistic, an article, a research study, a convention, or a UN resolution, please include a hyperlink to each one. We also strongly suggest that you double-check your facts to help us minimize errors and misinformation.
- If you would like to include a videos to go along with the article, kindly also include the link and source.
If these guidelines have not been helpful, refer to George Orwell’s six golden rules for effective writing:
- Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
- Never use a long word where a short one will do.
- If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
- Never use the passive where you can use the active.
- Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
- Break any of these rules sooner than saying anything outright barbarous.
Once your article has been received, we will get back to you on its status within 2-to-3 working days. Emailing us for feedback is more than welcome.
As a community-oriented initiative, we value any and all input and that includes your feedback. If you have any comments, recommendation, inquiries, or would simply like to share your experience, kindly send an email to [email protected].
