Israel Targets Civil Defense Centers and UNIFIL Fources in South Lebanon

On the morning of Friday, October 11, Israeli forces opened fire on a UNIFIL peacekeeping observation post stationed at its main base in Naqoura on the border between Lebanon and Israel. Two people have been wounded as a result.

The incident is the second of its kind within the last two days, after Israeli troops opened fire at three positions belonging to UNIFIL peacekeepers in south Lebanon on Thursday, October 10. The incident also included firing at the UNIFIL main base in Naqoura.

On Wednesday October 9, Israeli forces targeted a shelter center for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the town of Wardanieh in the Chouf district. The strike killed six individuals and injured 13 others according to a preliminary toll.

On the same day, the Israeli army targeted two civil defense centers in South Lebanon. The first attack targeted a Civil Defense volunteer center at the Islamic Health Authority in Wadi Jilo, Tyre, in a new massacre that killed two paramedics.

The other massacre took place when Israeli air forces struck a Civil Defense center in the town of Dardghaya, Tyre, killing five members of the Tyre national branch in what is a preliminary report as the search for those under the rubble continues.

The strikes bring the total of paramedics killed since the beginning of this round of fighting to at least 121.

These incidents are only some of the massacres that have occured in Lebanon since Wednesday, October 9. On Thursday, an Israeli strike targeted a residential building in Karak in the Zahle district, killing at least nine individuals as the search for those under the rubble is ongoing.

That same evening, Israel targeted central Beirut for the third and fourth time since the escalation of the war in mid-September, launching airstrikes on the areas of Ras el Nabeh and Basta. This led to the martyrdom of at least 22 individuals, with 192 others wounded.

These massacres are part of a systematic pattern adopted by Israeli forces in their military operations, whereby they have repeatedly and systematically targeted healthcare and emergency workers and civilians in Gaza, Lebanon and the region.

In Lebanon, 96 primary healthcare centers (PHCCs) and dispensaries were forced to close. Five hospitals were evacuated, six were rendered not operational and 21 were damaged.
