Everyone is welcome to submit a piece given it reflects a plausible state of mind. Beirut Today is an independent publication platform, and as such the editorial team is willing to take on a variety of themes and topics ranging from politics and current events to arts and cultural. It can also be an opinion piece open for discussion, news about your neighborhood, a poetry contribution.

We are aware and understand that journalism and pitching ideas may not be everyone’s strong suit, so we have compiled a list of guidelines that can help you navigate your way around. We ask that you read and reread these guidelines to facilitate our communication and the editorial process.

*Note: If your submission is a poem, the following does not apply to you. Simply send your submission to the email below, with Poem in the subject line of the email.

Kindly email your pitch to [email protected]. Due to the volume of articles that we receive, kindly expect a response in a maximum of two days, unless it is news or on current events. It would also be of use to us if you can write the following in the subject line of the email: Politics, News, Economy, Opinion, Lifestyle, Art, Event, Environment, Tech, Travel or the general theme of your pitch or article.

Writing your article:

We are enthusiastic to read all the pieces we receive, but to get a better idea of the type and style of articles that we are looking for, it is essential that your piece fit in with the guidelines below. It can also be beneficial for you to browse through the articles that we have published recently.

Your article must be consistent with the following:

  • The word limit of each article is between 500 to 900 words. Kindly keep your article within these limits unless it is absolutely necessary that you go over the word limit.
  • Any submission with content implying profanity, sexual connotations, disrespectful language, discrimination of all sorts as well as plagiarized content—will be respectfully rejected.
  • Your piece should be written concisely. Keep your sentences short and to the point. Be sure to bear in mind that you are writing for an audience, and as such your piece should be written in a manner that enables your ideas to sink in and resonate with readers. If you are writing about a particularly complex topic, breakdown the ideas to a more digestible format.
  • Make your piece as accessible as possible. You should write informally but in an informative tone. If you include acronyms make sure to insert what they stand for. Kindly do not use long, complex unnecessary words that can be replaced by easier ones.
  • If you include a statistic, an article, a research study, a convention, or a UN resolution, please include a hyperlink to each one. We also strongly suggest that you double-check your facts, to minimize errors and misinformation.
  • We require that a picture also accompany your article, with a link and a reference to this image.
  • If you would like to include a videos to go along with the article, kindly also include the link and source.

*Note: The editorial team will also guarantee anonymity in cases where the latter applies.

If the guidelines have not been as informative as you would have hoped, refer to George Orwell’s six golden rules for effective writing:

  1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
  2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
  5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
  6. Break any of these rules sooner than saying anything outright barbarous.

Once your article has been received, we will email you about whether or not it has been accepted. We kindly and adamantly ask that you NOT email us on when your article will be published. If it has been accepted it will be published eventually. Emailing us for feedback is more that welcomed.

Kindly bear in mind that not all pitches and submissions are accepted, and a rejection of your article is a possibility. We however encourage you to keep writing to us and pitching us your ideas.

As a community-oriented initiative, we value any and all input and that includes your feedback. If you have any comments, recommendation, inquiries, or would simply like to share your experience, kindly send an email to [email protected].
