Abandoned & Displaced: Navigating the war with an absent government

In late September 2023, Israel began to escalate its onslaught on Lebanon, displacing thousands upon thousands from southern Lebanon as it began to heavily bombard villages and towns with airstrikes.

Many of those displaced (IDPs) fled to public schools, which became designated displacement centers by the government. But these schools, like many other governmental institutions, are ill-prepared to house thousands.

This video, shot between late September and early October, documents how IDPs have struggled in light of the lack of preparations for proper housing, proper sanitation facilities, and in some cases, proper provision of food – gaps which the local communities have often had to fill.
